Salzburg is the stuff of fairytales! Salzburg is an Austrian city on the border of Germany, with views of the Eastern Alps. The joke 'If it's baroque, don't fix it' is a perfect maxim for Salzburg. The city is divided by the Salzach River, with medieval and baroque buildings of the pedestrian Altstadt (Old City) on its left bank, facing the 19th-century Neustadt (New City) on its right. The Altstadt birthplace of famed composer Mozart is preserved as a museum displaying his childhood instruments. Beside the fast-flowing Salzach River, your gaze is raised inch by inch to graceful domes and spires, the formidable clifftop fortress and the mountains beyond. It's a backdrop that did the lordly prince-archbishops and Maria proud.
Salzburg boasts an eco-friendly public transportation system that includes electrically powered trolleys as well as buses. Take full advantage of public transport and do your part to protect the climate. Their trolley buses run every 10 minutes during the day, while most regular buses come every 15 minutes. Check out the Public transport site.
Salzburg has four (4) Brewpubs as of March 2020, so as always lets start with them;
Stiegls Brauwelt, Braeuhausstr. 9
Open: Daily 10.00 - 00.00
This is a must stop on any Austria beer trip or if anywhere near Munich. It's like a big supermarket for beer lovers! There is a large visitor's centre with shop inside the historic brewery buildings featuring a bar with a very traditional interior, a posh and a cosy restaurant and a nice beer garden, where you can eat and drink all Stiegl beers from tap.The food was also good, classic and hearty Austrian cuisine well prepared and quite affordable, the staff are friendly and helpful. They also have the current Stiegl Hausbier from tap, which is always really interesting and much better than most of their standard beers. There is also a seperate room now, where you can do guided tastings of international craft beer.
Bräustübl Tavern at Mülln (Augustiner Bräu Kloster), Augustinergasse 4
Open: Daily 15.00 - 11.00
A grand place, situated on the premises of the Augustine monastery, it features a large beer hall, a huge beer garden and several inside stalls functioning as outlets for some local food businesses. The bier garden can get very corwded in the summer, attracting elderly local gentlemen and drunken tourests alike. There is only one beer at a time on offer! it is served in ceramic mugs of different sizes - don’t try to smuggle one out; it’s an offence. Basically, it’s the keller concept, but inside. On your way to your table, you may encounter a 20-piece oompa band jamming in some corner, some couples dancing to their music, people laughing and hitting tables with their fists, etc.. This uplifiting communal atmosphere is worth the trip alone Reasonable prices. Self-service, aided by some few employees.
Die Weisse - (Salzburger Weissbierbrauerei), Rupertgasse 10
Open: Mon - Thurs 10.00 - 00.00 Fri - Sat 10.00 - 02.00 Sun Closed
Located a bit out of the Centre. But the interior with all its wooden furniture and the delitful terrace with all the trees, plus chatty and smiling locals just make you want to spend time there. The only place where I got a pretzel in Austria! The food is traditional and very good, the staff are friendly. Their beer isn’t extraordinary, but still good and one of the better Weizens in Austria. Recommended!
S’Kloane Brauhaus (s’Guate), Schallmooser Hauptstrasse 27
Open: Mon - Fri 17.00 - 00.00 Closed: Sat - Sun
Located between Die Weisse and Urban Keller, (the map is wrong?) If what rocks your boat is authenticity and tasting the local culture, this is your place. A charming extremely authentic brewpub with old wood furniture with the typical white walls and ceiling. With a characteristic atmosphere with a friendly ambiance. A genuine ’locals’ pub in Salzburg. The food is very authentic and the menu is limited (say 6 dishes) but is very tasty. They have two solid house bier's, all in all a great place to pass the time with friends old and new.
Alchimiste Belge, Bergstrasse 10
Open: Daily 17.00 - 01.00
A pretty cool Belgian beer cafe. It’s interior is modern and quite small. With a relaxed vibe / ambience with old school jazz and soul beats playing in the background. As for the beer you will find your more common Belgian ales here. On tap they do have Delirium Tremens, a Kriekenbier, Leffe Brune for example. In bottles are the Trappist ales and a few lesser known Belgian beers. The staff are great really friendly and actually go to the effort of explaining the beers as they pour into proper glasses. You will pay a few more Euro for the beers here but worth checking out if you’re craving for some Belgian beers while in Salzburg. A good location in the city center but in a relaxed area.
Beffa Bar (#Belgiek), Bergstrasse 13
Open: Tues - Sat 19.00 - 02.00 or later? Closed: Sun - Mon
Located straight across the Alchimiste Belge above^^, the two bars belong together? Many Belgian beers and other than Alchimiste Belge also craft beer from other countries, but overall the selection is smaller. Nice bar for a younger audience, with alternative music. Unfortunately also for smoking.
academy Werbeagentur & Bar, Franz Josef Straße 4
Open: Mon - Fri 16.00 - 01.00 Sat 18.00 - 02.00 Sun Closed
A super friendly bar, very welcoming from the moment you enter. This bar is quite narrow, with a long bar with stools in front plus a stage to the rear, were they have live music. Very friendly locals and the staff, very untypical for Salzburg! They have 4 beers on tap: Schönramer Helles and Pils, IPA from Kaltenhausen and the excellent low alocohol Hopfenspiel from Trumer. They also have a good bottle and can selection. You can order food from the Grill over the Road. One of the best beer places in Salzburg.
Trumerei, Strubergasse 26
Open: Mon - Fri 09.30 - 00.00 Closed Sat - Sun
This beer bar/restaurant is the tap to the Trumer brewery which is located about 30 km from Salzburg city center. On tap they have six good beers from Trumer. In addition they have at least 50 bottle beers from Austria, Begium, Italy and many other countries. The interior is urban industrial with a nice central bar, and a cool bottle display in old wooden crates, also the beer garden is to be very nice. The food is standard pub fare and is absolutely ok. Definitely a place in which to return.
Gasthaus Zwettler's, Kaigasse 3
Open: Daily 11.30 - 01.00 (could be earlier)
A Small restaurant, slightly off the beaten track, not far from Mozartplatz near the Salzburg Dom.
Cosy and nicely decorated restaurant with low ceilings, tight spaces, with a lively bar and a cool feel.
The staff was quick and friendly. The food is really good and prepared wtih love, it's hearty Austrian cuisine at its best. Not only worth a visit for the food, has here you can find Kaiser Karl beers, three on tap, two more bottled.
Restaurant Stiegl-Keller, Festungsgasse 10
Open: Wed - Sun 11.30 - 22.00 Closed: Mon - Tues
What a fantastic place to drink a beer, on the side of the hill looking over the cathedral
and the town on the outdoor patio. An incredible historical keller in the style of a hunting
lodge with stags head on the wall, and high ceilings. A few really good beers, but service could be better? A tourist trap!
Goldene Kugel, Judengasse 3
Open: Daily 11.00 - 00.00
It is located in the centre of Salzburg, which is a very touristic area with many souvenir shops. This restaurant fits very well to this category and seems to be mainly made for tourists. Several large rooms, decorated very kitschy. Food seems to be typical Austrian - Beuschel, Schweinsbraten, etc. The highlight of this bar is clearly the Munich Augustiner on tap. Recommend to sit close to the small bar. Due to the beer on tap it is worthwhile a visit.
Sporer, Getreidegasse 39
Open: Mon - Sat 09.30 - 19.00 Closed Sun
Basically it's a liquor and wine store, but you can find few craft beers and wannabe crafts inside.
At least staff is friendly and helpful...
