Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, known for its high-rise hotels and resorts jutting up from yellow-sand beaches. Looming over that modern skyline are the city’s 2 massive hilltop citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, remnants of Moorish rule. The city's soaring Renaissance cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita ("one-armed lady") because one of its towers was curiously left unbuilt. If you think the Costa del Sol is soulless, you clearly haven’t been to Málaga. Loaded with a youthful vigour. Not that Málaga was ever lacking in energy: the Spanish-to-the-core bar scene could put bags under the eyes of an insomniac madrileño, while the food culture encompasses both Michelin stars and tastefully tatty fish shacks. So lets explore the brewpubs (2 as of May 2022) and the better beer bars of Málaga.
Cerveza Malaqa S.L., Calle Del Alcalde Guillermo Rein 158
The first brewery from Malaga to join the craft beer revolution, not only because of their products but also because of their attitude. They started with a more than decent brown ale, American pale ale, DIPA and a porter, and they will surely soon delight us with even better new beers. This microbrewery is still getting started but has a ton of potential and passion (the brewer knows his stuff). Malaga grows! A small production brewery, but if you turn up they are really friendly and no doubt will give you a tour and a taste of a couple of beers?
La Fábrica (Cervecería Artesanal Cruzcampo), Calle Trinidad Grund 29
The Craft Brewery and Tap Room by Cruzcampo is a large brewpub where they brew out of the ordinary Cruzcampo beers, actually quite decent pale ales and IPAs among them. It's situated between two streets with entrance from both sides. The brewing equipment is visible from the bar. A cool industrial setting, graffiti-covered walls, 16 taps boasting regular-changing beers, fast-food galore, and loads of fun-loving patrons. Not a big fan of industrial Cruzcampo lager, but this venue rocks. Occasional live music and super staff give this place a great vibe.👊🏽
Central Beers (Craft Beer & Food), Calle Cárcer 6
Located a 4-min walk from the Museo Picasso Málaga. A nice multi-tap pub (14), with local, a few interesting foreign and 2 Spanish commercial. The owner is real beer geek, it is pleasant to talk with him. Only High seats in the bar! A great menu to pair nicely with beers including beer in their sauces. (Very tasty) Staff also very friendly, chilled out and knowledgeable on their beers.
Cervecería "Arte & Sana Craft Beer Café", Plaza de la Merced 5
Birras Deluxe Craft Beer Shop & Café is located a 2-min walk from the Museo Picasso Málaga. A nice small bar with 7 taps, but only 2 with Spanish beers. Lots of bottles with a nice selection of local microbreweries, most of them cold. Discount for bottles taken away. Friendly and well knowledgeable staff who are very helpful with orientation on local craft scene.
El Rincon Del Cervecero (Beer Shop & Bar), Calle Casas de Campos No.5
A small bar located about ten minutes walk from the central station. 6 taps, 4 with local craft beer. Many bottles at reasonable prices, everything cold. The best selection of Spanish beers in the city (including locals). The staff are very knowledgeable. OK place bit a bit soulless?
Bar Cervecería Amsterdam Café, Avenida de Plutarco 63
A mix up type of place part Belgian brown bar, part Irish pub! Lots of bottles over 500 correct glass wear for most? OK for a stop if in the area?
Cervecería Mapamundi 2011, Calle Trinidad Grund 7
Cervecería Belga Het beste Biertje Mapamundi is located 5-10 minutes walk from central station, in a very quiet street just south of Alamada principal. Always 4 or 5 Belgium Beer on tap and more than 15 bottle of Belgium beer to select. The owner is always there and very helpful. A nice cosy place for a beer.
La Madriguera Bar, Calle Carreteria 73
The walls and decoration make it clear that this is a beer pub. Inside it's a narrow pub with rectangular tables in a row against the wall. The music is not too bad and the service is friendly. They have 12 craft draft beers including Stone brewing. There are some beers in a fridge. The tapas are very nice and is reasonably priced.
Zombier cervezas, Calle del Alcalde Guillermo Rein, 126
First of all this is not a regular shop. It is a warehouse with an amazing selection of 600 brews. Some beers are presented in a few shelves but in general all bottles are still in the cardbox they were shipped to Spain in. Since the shop isn’t really a shop and the beers are still in the boxes it is hard to get an overview of what beer they have at the time. They give you the time to walk around and pick up bottles from the card boxes if you like to browse all by yourself? The location is in a warehouse area, and there is no sign on outside the building, but if you call the phone number when you are outside No.10 they will come out and welcome you. It might be a good idea to call before going there since this is a one-man-shop. It is easy to find parking nearby. Prices are cheap, but remember to bring a lot of cash since there is no way to pay by card!
La Botica de la Cerveza, Calle Victoria 13
A rather small-sized beer shop with drink-in options from five taps. The bar is to the left and there are few tables and chairs to the right when entering the place. A well- stocked canned and bottled menu, mostly Spanish but also a fair share of Belgian beers. Helpful service with recommendations of interesting new Spanish brews. Central location close to Plaza de la Merced.
