Liege is a historical city on the river Meuse, the birthplace of the Emperor Charlemagne and the writer Georges Simenon and at the crossroads of an important motorway network linking Paris, Amsterdam & Cologne -Germany, it is only a few miles away from Maastricht, Holland. By train, Liege is just two hours from Paris by Thalys or one hour from Brussels. This is the cultural center of Wallonia with an intense artistic life as well as an important architectural heritage.
Getting There: There are two direct trains from Brussels (North, Central and Midi stations) per hour.
Not know as a beer destination, but there are a hand full of bars to keep you entertained and a couple of good beer stores. (July 2022)
Le Vaudrée, 109 rue du Val Benoit, Liege
Bar: Open: Sun -Thu10am-2am, Fri-Sat10am-4am
This place was pretty cool. It isn’t easy to find, but worth seeking out, it’s not very central, but close to Angleur station, it is the best bar in town. The beer list is pretty impressive, with lots of special beers on it. It’s a typical cosy Belgian restaurant with 1950’s looking furniture? The service is good and the food is great and quick plus the portions matched the prices.
Taverne Saint Paul, 8 Rue Saint Paul, Liege
Bar: Open; Daily 10:00 – 02:00, closed Sundays
A genuine brown pub, clearly with a bit of history. Located along a small side street by the cathedral, in the centre of Liege. Not a massive selection of beers, but a few interesting ones, and by far the best atmosphere found in any bar in Liege. The activity is mainly focussed around the nice old bar, which in Wallonia is not so common. The place is made up of three small rooms, and the furniture and ’brownness’ reflect that it has just recently celebrated its 125 year anniversary.
Pot Au Lait, Rue Soeurs De Hasque 9, Liege
Bar: Open; Mo-Fr 10:00, Sa 12:00, Su 14:00 until 2am or later?
The place is in the city centre, down an alley off a side street near the main cathedral in the centre. It can be a bit difficult to find? The alley greets you with graffitied walls, and during the summer there are benches and lots of people hanging about outside. Inside looks like an explosion of pop art and knick knacks left over from the 60s and 70s and thrown randomly about the room, in places its a psychedelic explosion, but this is not a bad thing. Most of the clientele here are a little too cool for school, but the place is funky and different, and nice for a change and very relaxed too. There is a nice selection of beers on tap, that change somewhat regularly and several other bottles to choose from. A bit of a hipster, alternative beer bar, but fun for everyone. A must do bar.
Le Vaudrée II, 149 rue Saint Gilles, Liege
Restaurant: Open; Mo-Fr: 07:00-01:00; Sa-Su: 09:00 - 01:00
This place is fantastic! A name and a place known by all the people living in Liege. They stock over 800+ Belgian and World beers with more than 20 at the tap. They have very rare beers and some nice beer cocktails. Simple food menu "a la Brasserie", try the "pavé" (Beef cube on a hot stone") Close to the city centre called "Le carré". You don’t go there for the atmosphere, you go there for the beer experience and that’s it. The owner is nice and knowledgeable with good English. I would highly recommend a trip here.
Beer Lover’s Café, Rue de la Violette 9, Liege
Micro Bar: Open; Café: daily from 11 am: Shop: 11am – 6pm
As the name suggests, the BeerLovers Café & Shop (formally L’Antre du Vaudrée) is a bar and shop where you can sample great beers from a list of about 300 beers. Located in the center of Liège, near the Market Square, along the Town Hall, the BeerLovers Café & Shop, it is first of all a spirit, the spirit of sharing and conviviality. All of their beers are served in a unique glass, the elegant galopin 18 cl, to promote the tasting and discovery of the adventure that is craft beer. It’s a great friendly place where beer lovers seek and find the rare gem’s, where friends gather, where eyes meet and winks are lost.
Brasserie Sauveniere, 12 place Xavier NeujeanTarif Brasserie, Liege
Brewpub? Open; Monday to Thursday from 11 amto 1 am
It's a very cosy place to be, have a beer or grab something to eat. In summer the terrace is really nice to sit down for a fresh beverage. The restaurant is self-service and the food is lovely and sometimes is better than what you would expect? A good and cool place to meet friends. The brewery? Is located next to the cinema Sauvenière and benefits from its exceptional architectural setting in the heart of Liège. Beer list is not big or for that matter that interesting, but great value food make this a good place to visit.
Drink de Special-Beer, Boulevard de l’Ourthe 10, Liege
Beer Store: Open; 09:00 – 18:00 Monday to Friday
A really nice shop! More than 800 beers in stock. If you like craft beers you must visit this place :)
