A city with more than 1,200 years of history, Erfurt is the capital of the Free State of Thuringia and has one of Germany’s most complete Medieval centres. Here, St Mary’s Cathedral shines for its Romanesque and Gothic art, and the Krämerbrücke is a bridge traced by quaint timber-framed merchants’ houses. It was in Erfurt that Martin Luther became a monk at the Augustinian Monastery, and at the end of the 18th century the city was at the forefront of the Enlightenment, frequented by cultural heavyweights like Goethe, Schiller and Wilhelm von Humboldt. One of Europe’s oldest intact synagogues is also in Erfurt, along with a complete Baroque fortress, charming squares and moving memorials to the days of the GDR and Holocaust.
Local transportation: The Erfurt Stadtbahn is a light rail (German: Stadtbahn) network that is the basic public transit system of Erfurt. It represents the evolution of the city's original tramway which, outside of the city center, travels on track in its own right-of-way.
Distances are short in the city center, where you'll spend most of your time. If you're carrying heavy luggage, you may want to hire a taxi or use a tram to reach your hotel. EVAG operates public transportation in the city.
On foot, the city center is a level walk of about 15 minutes from the railroad station. Head toward the Innenstadt on the Bahnhofstraβe; when you reach the irregularly-shaped Anger square, stop at Buch Habel (Anger 7) or Buchhandlung Peterknecht (Anger 28) to get a street map, or The city of Erfurt's interactive map will help you plan your arrival.
As of June 2020 there are five brewpubs so why not start with them, its what we normally do!
Waldhaus Bräu Erfurt, Rhodaer Chaussee 12
Open: Daily 11.00 - 00.00
Situated a good way out of town on the edge of extensive woods, although it is walking distance (bus 60 stops directly outside and runs from the HBF). This is a huge brewpub with a spacious biergarten in the summer and a covered winter garden. The beers are above average and well worth the trip out. Good friendly staff in a nice and cosy atmosphere with silent surroundings 👍
Waldkasino, Erfurter Brauereigaststätte, Waldkasino 2, 99096
Open: Daily 10.00 - 00.00
Located near the end of a tram line from town centre on the edge of the forest. You can walk here from Waldhaus (above ^^) through the forest. Outside it has a strange somehow lost in the forest feel! The interior has an oldish traditional German brauhau feel, quite a large place with lots of rooms and a lovely huge beergarden with a great view over Erfurt. There is also a winter garden for colder days. The brew kit is nice and shiny and they normally have three beers on, seasonal beers as well, the Schwarzbier is pretty dam good. The toilets are worth checking out for the seat cleansing device post flush! 🤪 Well worth a visit.
Bienenhaus - Feine Kerzen, Lindenplatz 1a
Open: Normal shop hours?
This is really just a bee keeper's shop for honey, candles etc, they do sell their own mead, that is indeed brewed with their honey but weather this is on site or not is not stipulated or forthcoming? Worth a visit if you like mead and to support a local business.
Braukeller Erfurt, Fischmarkt 5
Open: Wed - Sat 17.00 - 00.00
The Braukeller Erfurt is nicely furnished, with light wooden furniture, mostly tall stools and table, there is a beautiful vaulted cellar and there is always a friendly cosy vibe to the place. You can see the mini brew kit and fermenting tanks and smell the beers as they are brewed, they even serve some of their beers direct from wooden casks. The staff and the "Braumeister" really know their stuff, and will give you a small tour of the brewery. A small traditional menu to go along with the great tasty brew's, I can not recomend this place enough 😋 Until next time 🤗
Zum Goldenen Schwan, Michaelisstrasse 9
Open: Daily 11.00 - 23.00
One of our favourite bars in Erfurt. Centrally located and an easy stroll to the tram stop back to HBF. It's quite a large place with lots of small rooms a convivial vibe and obviously well loved. Their house-brewed beers supplies by Felsenkeller, who might well have a test brew kit on site? Good food and friendly staff what more can you ask for?
Altstadtkneipe Noah, Grosse Arche 8
Open: Mon 18.00 - 03.00 Tues - Sat 16.30 - 03.00 Closed: Sun
A pleasant surprise to find this old style German pub with a nice beer garden at the rear, inside it's quite small and cosy with lost of dark wood and heavily decorated with old photos of the town and beer memorabilia. This place has the best bottle selection of any bar in Erfurt, the beer list consists of some 80+ beers, of which almost a third are craft beers, some Belgians but most Germans, So definitely a must-visit if in town. The service friendly and the prices are decent.
Sagasser Getränkefachmarkt, Moskauer Platz 20
Open: Mon - Sat 08.00 - 20.00 Closed: Sun
AN excellent getränkemarkt located in an Erfurt suburb, which is dominated by concrete and panelflats. Quite good selection of local Thuringia beers plus a larger selection of the usual suspects from Franconia, which is just what you need when beer shopping in Germany. They also have a very big selection of various Bavarian beers. The prices are very Good
Der Bier-Rufer, Michaelisstraße 46
Open: Tues - Sat 16.00 - 01.00
A very cosy and relaxed shop. A really great place to find many different types of microbrews from all over the world. In the lower area there is a vaulted cellar where you can enjoy the beer, and also do tutored beer tastings. The owner is quick to help and suggest some tasty beers. All the beers can be purchased to take home or drink at the store with friends. A great place to hang out.
