Yellowknife is the capital city of Canada’s Northwest Territories. It lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, with possible views of the northern lights in fall and winter. Exhibits at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, by Frame Lake near downtown, highlight the area’s human and natural history. The Ingraham Trail, a scenic drive, crosses the Yellowknife River and heads east to lakes and trails. Friendly, multicultural, subarctic Yellowknife supports 50% of the NWT population and is a blend of Dene and Métis from across the territory; Inuit and Inuvialuit from further north; grizzled non-Aboriginal pioneers; get-rich-quick newcomers from southern Canada; and a sizable selection of more recent immigrants from different parts of the world. Named Somba K'e (Place of Money) in the local Tlicho language, the city, a mining hub and surprisingly artsy place, has been the territorial capital since 1967 and is unsurpassed in winter for views of the northern lights. NWT Brewing Company / The Woodyard Brewhouse & Eatery, 3905 Franklin Ave
There is only one real craftbeer place in town and that's The Woodyard Brewhouse & Eatery. Inside the room is in two sections, it's relatively dark inside and a lot of wood and great ornaments on the walls including a caribou skull. They have 12 distinctly different drafts on tap. It's the only craftbeer made in the territory! They have a couple of fixed beer flights but they can't be mixed and matched. The ambiance is really great with an old school vibe of the bar counter. A ture locals bar, were the locals love to make new friends and reach out to visitors. Otto says; Friendly staff, excellent food, warm and welcoming vibe. Hands down the best spot in Yellowknife.
Liquor Store, 5108 49 St
Nice clean store with good staff and a wide range of products. Liquor prices in Yellowknife are a strange commodity. Beer is expensive (read: obscene), domestic and imported. There is however a very stylish local Micro Brewer which provides a superior product, in my view, at competitive prices. Wine prices are competitive with other provinces and there is a very good selection. Also a good selection of liquor and oddly Scotch is cheaper in some situations than farther south. There are 2 liquor stores in town, this is easily the best?
Copperhouse, 484 Range Lake Rd
Comfortable, well-styled atmosphere with good food and a great brunch menu. A good selection of NWT beers on tap with a few guests plus macro bottles, plus a huge whisky and gin selection. Servers are friendly and the environment is nice.
The Black Knight Pub, 4910 49 St
Black knight is an amazing place to go for Breakfast/lunch/Dinner or evening night with friends and a good beer this place does it all. The service is awesome! Curry knight Thursday is a good night to visit. Black Knight is a very popular spot with the locals. Occasionally live music in the upstairs room. Amazing atmosphere, the service is fast and cheerful.
Kilt and Castle, 5019 49 St
If you want to chill and have a beer or a drink in a nice cosy place with some friends the castle is a place to go to. The cosy atmosphere of this pub allows you to relax after a long day. No food just snacks. An awesome location for people watching if you sit along the windows up front.
The Monkey Tree Pub, 483 Range Lake Rd
This is a great pub. The staff are friendly and the locals are fun people. There are daily food and drink specials. They have a pool table and a great, beautiful, sun drenched patio. Savor Canadian food that will combine many elements of culinary traditions.
