Whitehorse is the capital of northwest Canada’s Yukon territory. To the south are the basalt cliffs of Miles Canyon, site of a former gold rush town. From the canyon, the Yukon River Loop Trail winds north past the Whitehorse Fishway fish ladder toward the S.S. Klondike, a restored sternwheeler that once plied the Yukon River. North, the Takhini Hot Pools’ mineral springs offer views of the northern lights in winter. Not immediately appealing, Whitehorse rewards the curious. It has a well-funded arts community, good restaurants and a range of motels. Exploring the sights within earshot of the rushing Yukon River can easily take a day or more. Look past the bland commercial buildings and you'll see many heritage ones awaiting discovery. For more info visit the cities web-site:
Yukon Brewing, 102 Copper Rd
They have a great reputation, and it is merited. This is the biggest and most well publicized brewery in Whitehorse. The brewery offers tours and free tastings of a half dozen beers. The tasting room is quite small with four long trestle type tables in a cool modern setting with the retail section sectioned off providing a great atmosphere for tasting the brews on offer. Friendly folks who are quite knowledgeable about the product. In the back is the production brewery. It’s a nice solid brewery if you find yourself in Whitehorse, you pretty much have to come here.
Winterlong Brewing Co. 83 Mt Sima Rd
Winterlong Brewing Co. was a dream that started in the summer of 2014. It's an awesome brewery, one of the newer microbrewery's in town. Particularly great for more modern West coast styles, like IPAs etc. It's a nice room to hang out in, a typical brewery taproom. Nice, but pricey swag. Lots of their own unfiltered full flavour beers to try. There are nice snacks available. Good vibe here, a must stop for beer geeks, in Whitehorse.
Woodcutter's Blanket - Bar & Brewery, 2151 2nd Ave
Wow this place is consistently rated as a top bar in Canada! This is a cocktail bar, with style, that has put in a brewery. The brewery started production in 2019. A cosy atmosphere, the bar portion of the building is an old log cabin. A small intimate bar area and nice seating for dining. The menu is locally sourced and they do some great dishes. The servers and bartender are all very attentive and cool. A recommended stop.
Deep Dark Wood Brewing Company, 2A Collins Dr
What's known as a nano brewery. Their brews are small (a little over 200 litres at a time), and they don't adhere to the "flagship" model. This allows them to stretch their wings creatively, completely free of a production schedule. Their beers are produced using a variety of yeasts and bacteria, and are "living" in the bottle (no kettle sours brewed here). Their inspiration comes from the farmhouse brewing traditions of Europe, and brewers of funky, weird beers around the world. Many of their mixed culture beers are aged (and sometimes fermented) in oak barrels that previously held wine or various spirits. The oak and its previous inhabitant become a part of the flavour profile, and their mixed culture takes residency in the nooks and crannies. The owner and head brewer Matt is an unabashed hophead, so look for lots more IPAs coming your way. They have also got a variety of other styles on deck, so look for stouts, porters, clean Belgian styles, and more, coming soon. So why not stop by the brewery to pick up bottles to go (no onsite pours) and brewery merch, or just to see the operation. Located at the first left on Collins Lane, just off Mt. Sima Road.
Polarity Brewing, 2237 2nd Ave #170
A couple of brothers (with a great team behind them) making tasty, innovative beers and delicious local food. A large modern building with a hipster kind of vibe. There is a corner bar area that the stailess stell brew kit sits behind. The beers are displayed on chalk boards over the bar. 16 taps offering a great line up of beers with flights of 4 available. The food menu is awesome local gastro style food. Plus a great enclosed patio and the location next to the river is probably really nice in the warmer weather. An amazing spot for social gatherings and get together's. Their Trivia night are fun, plus happy hour until 5pm Tuesday toFriday. Polarity is everything you want from a craft brewery. Creative and delicious beers, beautiful location, pleasant and friendly staff.
Dirty Northern Bastard inc Miner's Daughter, 103 Main St
Probably the best selection of beer in the Yukon. Dirtys has a quality list, including US imports you wouldn't expect to find in Whitehorse. One of the best restaurants in Whitehorse! Fast and friendly service. A nice cosy atmosphere and not too loud. A must try for anyone.
