Schwarzer Bauer Bergstrassse 19, 90403 Nurnberg-Sebgald
Daily 11.00 – 01.00: Transport; Bus no 4 Tiergartnertor or DB Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof.
This is the farthest brew pub from the railway station and was the one we headed for first so as to be sure not to miss it? Has we have heard good reviews of the beers. Here we go a bit of history Hausbrauerei Altstadhof was the first of the new wave breweries to open in Germany back in 1984. It was originally owned by Neumarkter Lammsbrau could now be independent? The brewery, together with a small distillery plus a couple of other bars, stands behind the pub. The Black Farmer is a small, single-roomed bar with seating for around 30ish people located in one of Nuremberg's oldest buildings. Food is available, although the menu is limited but looked quite good. We sampled the full range of beers and found them very quaffable indeed but we were only in town for a few hours and had quite a few places we wanted to see and bier to sample

Andechser im Deutschem Kaiser Konigstrasse 55, Nurnber-Lorenz
Daily 11.00 – 24.00 food until 23.00; Rooms Available.
Transport; U u1 and u11 Lorenzkirch. DB Nurnberg Hbf
Our second bier hall of choice and maybe it was the wrong choice! was one of a chain of Andechs brewery taps in major Bavarian cities, this one is in the bar of the Deutscher Kaiser Hotel, opposite Barfusser (see bleow). The brewery’s entire range of beers is usually available on draught. The long, narrow bar is furnished in typical bier-hall style, with wood prominent and a vaulted ceiling. We had a meal her eventually as the staff left a lot to be desired and even then we don’t think we got what we ordered. A typical tourist trap and the beers were only just average. There is limited seating outside. Any way you can't have good beer all the time without supping the occasional decidedly average one!

Barfueser Hallplatz 2, 90402 Nurnberg-Lorenz
Daily 11.00 – 1.00; Transport; U u1 and u11 Lorenzkirch. DB Nurnberg Hbf
Our last and probably the best stop of that day was the most excellent subterranean brewpub near the Hauptbahnhof. It's in the cellar of a massive rennaissance stone building that has one of the largest roofs I've ever seen. The first of the Barfusser (meaning barefoot) chain; the others are in Heilbronn, Ulm and Neu-Ulm. One very large, vaulted bar, is kitted out in beer hall style, long pine tables, red flagged floor etc. Slightly disconcerting is the collection of British pub signs hanging from the ceiling, also a couple of smaller rooms to the side. The brewing equipment is prominent on the right, opposite the bar and kitchen. On our visit on a mid week afternoon it was quite busy, but the staff were very friendly and helped find t-shirts to fit! We tried the full range of beer and all were quite good. In fine weather there is a large terrace at the front on Konigstrasse. Any way time and the train wait for no man so we had to wave a found farewell to Nurnberg.

Transport; Bus nos 7 & 9 Wodanstrasse.
The Country Beer Paradise originated in 1986 as a drinks market. These people are real specialists in traditional Franconian beer. The pub sells beers from 15 small breweries. From each brewery there is one draught beer from an oak barrel that changes constantly and others all from the bottle. There is a chain of 3 or 4 pubs and a beer shop. In 1994 the company opened this pub on the corner of Brunhildstrasse. Since then, two more have opened in Nurnberg, along with franchised pubs in both Nurnberg and Furth. The pub itself is on two levels and furnished in a very basic style, not that this is likely to put off the average beer geek!
Landbierparadies; Rothenburger Strasse 26, 90443 Nurnberg-Gostenhof.
Mon-Thurs 17.30-0.100 Fri 14.00-01.00, Sat 12.00-01.00, Sun & Hols 10.00-01.00.
The second of the Landbierparadies pubs, this branch opened in 1996. The other two Nurnberg pubs are at Galvinstrasse 10 and Sterzingerstrasse 4, with the Furth franchise at Friedrich-Ebertstrasse 100. All have the same opening hours except Sterzingerstrasse which opens at 11.00 on Sunday. Slightly cosier than the Wodanstrasse branch, though to be honest that’s no great achievement.

Open; Fri & Sat 10.00-01.00 Sun-Thurs 10.00 24.00. Transport, U u1 & u11 Barenschanz.
Brewpub in part of what used to be the Lederer brewery (which was closed by Tucher). this pub is a shrine to all things Lederer with a steam engine and four brewing coppers the most notable of the countless artefacts. The beers are brewed in Furth. The pub has the largest beer garden in town with seating for over 1,000.
Schlenkerla Schranke Beim Tiergartnertor 3, 90403 Nurnberg-Sebald.
Closed Sun; Mon-Sat 1.00-23.00: Transport, Bus no 4 Tiergartnertor or DB Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof
Another beery pub just down the road from the Altstadhof. Bamberg's Schlenkerla (Heller) brewery gave them the right to use their name. This small pub, dating from 1500, stands below the Tiergartnertor, close to the castle and across the street from Albrecht Durer’s house. Capacity increases substantially in fine weather when around 50 tables appear outside. They have their own butchers and serve the finest Nurnberger Rostbratwurst. The five regular draught beers are occasionally supplemented by a guest.

Open; Mon-Sat 10.30-24.00, Sun & Hols 11.00-15.00. Transport, U u1 & u11 Weisser Turm.
Hotel, restaurant and wine bar in the south-western part of the old town. Wine is favoured over beer, but there are nevertheless a couple of interesting beers available. The rambling restaurant has several different rooms, one or two featuring some lovely wood panelling. Good food is served and is appreciated by the mostly mature clientele. The small Weinstube next to the hotel entrance opens at 10.. Monday to Saturday.
Tucher-Brau am Opernhause; Am Kartausertor 1, 90402 Nurnberg-Lorenz.
Open Daily 100.00-24.00. Transport, U U2 & 21 Opernhaus.
Possibly not the official tap, but it’ll do. This characterful pub stands alongside the city wall opposite the Opera House, between the German National Museum and the German Transport Museum. Full of bric-a-brac, it’s seemingly Christmas all year round. There is one main room with an annex to the side and a beer garden at the rear which overlooks the old town’s dry moat. The menu includes some Balkan specialities.
Zum Gulden Stern; Zirkelschmiedsgasse 26, 90402 Nürnberg.
The world´s oldest Bratwurstkueche (they claim). They sell Bratwurst the traditional Nuremberg way by the pair. The pub has been around since at least 1420? The interior is very rustic. You can’t go wrong then spend a couple of hours in here soaking up the atmosphere and having a nice Dunkels Bier with a wurst, mmmm and with 3 Regular draught beers from the Tucher brewery your can’t go wrong.
