Magdeburg is a central German city on the Elbe River. In the city centre, Magdeburg Cathedral is the first Gothic-style cathedral to be constructed on German soil, one of the largest church buildings in Germany and the most famous attraction in the City and the burial place of the Holy Roman emperor Otto the Great. With 1200 years of rich and colourful history, Magdeburg is one of the oldest cities in the new Laender of the former East Germany. There are only few cities in Central Europe which compare to Magdeburg in terms of its eventful historical past. Magdeburg was once an imperial palatinate, a member of the Hanseatic League and a Prussian Fortress which has been marked by unfathomable war and destruction. However, Magdeburg allowed the currents of time to take it into a new future full of possibilities; the city was reconstructed and a particular importance was attached to the maintenance, care and preservation of cultural goods. In the heart of the city at the Old Market (Alter Markt) you can admire the so-called Magdeburg Horseman, the bronze replica of the first free-standing equestrian statue to be found north of the Alps. The Museum of Cultural History details the city’s medieval importance with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen, a Romanesque monastery complex, is home to a contemporary art gallery and sculpture park.
So don't expect "beer heaven" with only two brewpub as of July 2022 and couple of other places of note, but hey its a cool place to spend a couple of days;
Brauhaus Brewckau, Schönebecker Str. 16
Hours: Wed - Sat 16.30 - 11.30 or later?
A restaurant and brewpub that enriches Magdeburg immensely! In each small corner of the brewery you can feel how much passion the owner and his crew invest. The ambiance is great and so this pub can easily keep up with the competition on Hasselbachplatz, they may even surpass. The waiters are nice, good music in the background and the prices are fair. The highlight is their own brewed beer, that comes in many different styles, usually they have five on tap and a few different bottles. The short brewery tour is definitely recommended. By far the Best beer in Magdeburg IMO
Diamant Brauhaus, Luebecker Strasse 127
Hours: Mon - Tues 11.00 - 15.00 Wed - Sun 11.00 - 22.00
Located in a side alley, that has the same name as the main street it is off? (Sat-Nav will not find!), moreover local people in the street can’t help with finding this place! Diamant Brauhaus is the first brewery in Magdeburg, the capital of Sachsen-Anhalt, after a long period without any brewery in the city. Inside the restaurant area in the front, the brewing kit is at the back. One standard beer called Pils and seasonals, plus a couple of guest beers. The food is classic German style: tasteful, and good value for money. Very friendly staff. Not one of the countries best brew pubs but worth poping in for the "ticks".
Getränkefeinkost, Warschauer Str. 20
Hours: Tues - Fri 13.00 - 19.00 Sat 11.00 - 18.00
A bottle shop a couple of minutes from Magdeburg-Buckau HBF. Nicely laid out venue with the beer displayed neatly. A little sampling table up on a mezzanine level. A good mix of German and other European beer and also an outlet for Brewckau. SFriendly staff and good prices, what more can you ask for, a solid bottle shop. Note: Take plenty of cash as they don’t take Credit Card's.
Kaufland Magdeburg, Luebecker Strasse 122
Hours: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 22.00 Sat 06.00 - 20.00
A supermarket with a great selection of local beers primarily focused on Saxony-Anhalt and surrounding Bundesländer, which is exactly what you need in the area. The selection is much better than your average getränkemarkt. So if you’re looking for ticks from local breweries, go to Kaufland. Really good prices and a choice of over 50+ hard to find German treats.
Here is are thebrief details of the best of the other pubs and bars to find good beers;
Kunstkneipe Nachdenker, Olvenstedter Str. 43
A nice bar away from the busy area of Hasselbachplatz but still accessible. It's run by a collective of friends and you can tell that they're having fun doing it. There's regular events like Open Mic Nights and Quizzes that are becoming more and more popular.
Bines Bierstube, Magdeburg
A small cozy little pub, comfortable, relaxed and hospitable with a nice host who always: provides a nice evening.
Gaststätte Kreuzbube, Kroatenweg 12
An honest rustic German bar, comparable to a classic Berlin corner bar. Cones are still dominated here and the prices are more than fair. Well worth a visit, but beware there are still real drinker's here! Were it's all beer & schnapps and no Schicki-Mickie! Plus home cooked food.
Musikkneipe Flowerpower, Breiter Weg 252
Be prepared for the decorations. Great pub with tasty beer, incredible hippy style decorations, and very good rock music Plus bartenders are awesome and very friendly! Definitely worth having a look!
Ratsgarten, Hartstraße 2
A great cosy place in the middle of the city, in the shade of the trees and with always something to look at. Nice service simple but very delicious food and beer.
The Lion - City Pub GmbH, Keplerstraße 7
An Irish pub on two floors that is worth a look in but don't expect anything special.
Einstein. Die Bierkneipe, Einsteinstraße 3
A cool rocker's pub, which is unparalleled in this area. The vibe is like a big family, one belongs immediately to it. Note a smokers pub!
Sportsbar Happy Day, Ziolkowskistraße 18
The staff are always friendly and fun. The atmosphere is inviting and also for the people who are not so much interested in sports there is a lot offered. It's always fun, so go over and have a look!
