Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Kiel lies approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Hamburg. Due to its geographic location in the north of Germany, the southeast of the Jutland peninsula and the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea, Kiel has become one of the major maritime centres of Germany. For instance, the city is known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the biggest sailing event in the world. Kiel is also known within modern history for the Kiel Mutiny, where German sailors refused to board Navy vessels in protest against Germany's continued fighting in World War I which led to the abdication of the Kaiser and the formation of the Weimar Republic. In the old town, the rebuilt, medieval St. Nikolai Church hosts classical concerts. Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse are streets lined with shops. Along the Kiel Fjord, the Maritime Museum displays model ships and nautical instruments in a former fish auction hall.
So don't expect "beer heaven" with only two brewpub (July 2022) and couple of other places of note, but hey its a cool place to spend a couple of days;
Kieler Brauerei, Am Alter Markt 9
Hours: Mon - Sat 11.00 - 23.00 Sun 12.00 - 22.00
A traditional Brauhaus right in the heart of the Altstadt in Kiel. This big brewpub seems to draw crowds of all ages and from all walks of life. They have about five beers on tap including one or two from guest breweries plus a few bottled beers to choose from. Inside its a dark cosy cave like place. Lots of rustic wooden furniture, and the walls are in an un-even finish with a brown wash over them plus lots of murals. The copper brew kit is very prominent and you can sit in front of it. Also As you wander around downstairs you can see the open fermenting tanks. Really polite, quick and staff that make the stay quite nice. A nice relaxing atmosphere. The meals served are good German pub fare hearty and filling. A great place to check out if your ever in Kiel.
Tom Kyle - Altstadt-Brauhaus, Am Alter Markt 16
Hours: Daily 11.30 - 23.00
A combined Brauhaus and sports bar right next to Kieler Brauhaus (^above^). A modern building, with cosy booth type seating downstairs and upstairs its quite large and spacious, they are a couple of "blue" pool tables and dart boards plus a few TV's to watch sports on (if that’s your thing?). The upper area can be reached via a staircase or elevator. I can imagine it gets quite noisy at peak periods. They have five of their own beers available usually and you can get them all in a flight, they are nothing to rave about, ranging from average to poor! The food menu is typical European fare and quite passable. The staff are not very attentive.

A large supermarket in the Sophienhof shopping mall, near the railway station, and a fairly short walk from the ferries to Oslo and Göteborg. The selection of beers (mostly German) is more than decent, and the prices are reasonable.
