Győr, this mellow and colourful town is situated half way between Vienna and Budapest, and hosts a vast array of architectural, cultural and natural treasures. The radial road network of the settlement connects Slovakia from the north, Austria from the west, Lake Balaton from the south and Budapest from the east to the town, the heart of Kisalföld (" The Small Plains"). The Győr-Pér airport opened not long ago makes the town accessible by air as well. Győr is Hungary's second richest town in historic buildings outside Budapest and has won Europe-award for the protection of the historic buildings, in acknowledgment of the reconstruction of the Baroque centre of the town. Churches, palaces, museums, characteristic corner-balconies and narrow lanes, all reminders of a historic past, invite visitors to take a walk in the centre of the town. Their sacral monuments in and around Győr are the memorials of 1000-year-old Hungarian Christianity. Saint István (Stephan) founded the Episcopate of Győr together with the first dioceses one thousand years ago. The Basilica and the Bishop's Castle erected on Káptalandomb (the Chapter Hill) are symbols of the Christianity of West-Hungary. Győr is a town of festivals where friends of the arts and those who are eager for a high-quality relaxation can find attractive programmes all the year round. This lively settlement with buoyant economic and commercial development offers splendid opportunities also for the representatives of business life to meet here.Nature embraces and weaves through Győr along the rivers. The medicinal waters, the landscape and the cultural-historical treasures of the environment: the Szigetköz water-land and the Pannonhalma Hills allure people who want to have a rest or relaxation. The Rába-Quelle Bath, the bath of meetings has been recently opened in the city of meetings. Through its services it creates additional excellent opportunities for an active holiday, for recovery or relaxation.
Goyor has one brewpub as of July 2022 so lets star the beer guide with it;
Tichy Családi Sörfozde, Veres Péter utca 9, Ménfőcsanak
Open: ??
Located in a suburb, 7km from the city centre you can find this microbrewery/brewpub. Placed in a backyard of a house, it's a simple wooden house that is closer to a winter garden than a pub. There are two small tables opposite the counter and that's all, plus you will find a patio with 4 tables. Splendid service by the brewer. Good beer, and a nice looking brewery.
Lima Pub & Hostel, Arany János 13.
Open: Tues-Sat 15:00-22:00, Sun 15:00-20:00, Monday Closed
A pub with great craft beers! And the damn best barkeeper of the Győr is working here! There are four taps serving some hard to find micro beers and a great selection of bottled micro beers, definitely the best place in town, as they say, Eat, Drink & Sleep. This place has it all a small bar are with lots of wooden chairs and tables although it is small and gets very busy, there is a small seating area on the street at the front. Good place to stay in nice clean well appointed rooms. Good food and great service. A must do while in Győr. Recommend
Csillag EzPresszó, Csillag u. 6
Open: Mon 10-22, Tue-Thu 10-24, Fri 10-3 Sat 15-3, Sun 15-23
A cool ambient bar like a kind of ruin bar, lots of books line the walls the furniture is an eclectic mix of old couches and retro 60's chairs and school table and chairs the walls are full of music related memorabilia, but it is too small place. It's full almost all the time. They serve draft beer from six taps. Prices are moderate and atmosphere is great! I recommend it.
Hrabal Söröző, Czuczor Gergely u 6
Open: Mon-Thu 11-22, Fri-Sat 11-2, closed Sundays
A little bit of Prague! Delicious traditional food, and authentic beers from the Czech Republic. Inside its dark wood and black leather chairs quite a modern place.
Belgian Beer Café, Árpád út 34
Open: Mon-Fri 10-24, Sat 11-22, Sun 11-24
Located at the start of the main pedestrian drag, close to the Tourist Information in Gyor. It’s just the usual generic Belgian themed cafe, a large seating area, divided into three different open rooms, wood paneled walls and wooden furniture. This is as good as it gets in town! A few common ones on tap like Leffe Blonde and Brune, Hoegaarden, Stella and Belle-Vue Kriek. A 250ml glass will set you back roughly $2.50. Bottles of Trappists go for around £4/5. There is also an attached restaurant serving up plenty of good food. The staff are friendly. Also it’s not a bad retreat from the macro lagers that dominate every pub around these parts.
John Bull Pub, Aradi Vértanúk u. 3
Open: Mon 10-22, Tue-Sat 10-24, Sun 10-22
A pub in the city centre, close to Hotel Klastrom. There is a large outside seating area that is popular when its sunny. This was more of a restaurant than a English pub, the food was is good, and not expensive. The choice of beers is on line with any UK high Street bar, bland fizzy beer!
