The beer scene in Bratislava was far more sober than what you find in its sister cities such as Prague and Vienna. But in recent years from 2020 there has been a surge in "craft" bars and brew-pubs and there are now quite a few fun hangouts to explore, where you can enjoy a few pints of beer. The mature and passionate beer culture of Bratislava shares its brewing history with the Czech lands and Eastern Europe. For a local Slovak the enjoyment of pairing a hearty Slovak meal with mugs of traditional Czech or Slovak beers is second to none.
Main Bratislava Tourist Places
Bratislava Castle
The castle dominates over the city of Bratislava on a hill overlooking the river Danube. The first written reference to Bratislava is found in Salzburg Annals of 907, relating to a battle between Bavarians and Hungarians. The castle hill was populated as early as in the late Stone Age but the first known inhabitants were the Celts who had founded a fortified settlement here – 'Oppidum'. The border of the Roman Empire 'Limes Romanus' ran through the area over four centuries. During the Great Moravian Empire, Slavs built a fortress that became a significant centre at the time.
In the 10th century, Bratislava became an integral part of the growing Hungarian state, with stone palace and the church of St. Salvator being built on the castle hill in the 11th century. In the 15th century, during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg, the castle was built in Gothic style as an anti-Hussite fortress. During this time, a new entrance to the castle was built on the eastern side - the Sigismund gate, while seven-metre thick fortification walls were built on the western side and a castle well was constructed in 1437. Its depth is 85 m with the water table at 42 m. In the 16th century, King Ferdinand ordered the castle to be rebuilt in Renaissance style. In the 17th century, when the castle became the seat of hereditary province chief Pálffy, it was rebuilt in a baroque style.
During the reign of Maria-Theresa, the castle was furnished for her son-in-law - governor Albert of Saxony and Tessen, who was a fervent collector of arts and who installed his works at the castle. This collection was later moved to Vienna to become today's Albertina gallery. Under the reign of Joseph II, the castle housed a general seminary to educate priests. Later, it served as barracks for soldiers until it burnt down in 1811. The present reconstruction was carried out as late as 1953 - 1968.
Today the castle serves the Slovak Parliament and houses collections of the Slovak National Museum, exhibitions of Treasures from the ancient past, as well as the Museum of History.
The mighty fortress above the confluence of the rivers Morava and Danube is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Slovakia. The oldest traces of settlement date back to 5000 BC. In the 1st century BC, the territory was populated with Celts. At the times of the Roman Empire, DevĂn was an important military station and, at the times of the Great Moravian Empire, the castle was a significant boundary fortress as well as one of political and administration centres. The first written reference comes from 864. After the fall of the Greater Moravian Empire, the castle served as a border castle of the Hungarian state. Later the castle changed its owners several times. In 1809, the castle was blown up by Napoleonic troops. The castle is a national monument of cultural legacy belonging to the Municipal Museum at present.
The castle is open to the public until October, when it closes for the winter, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
Archeological works are ongoing at the site. In the last five years archeologists uncovered the remains of a Roman tower from 1st century AD, fragments of ceramics and a prehistoric settlement.
The three-nave Gothic church was built in the place of the original Romanesque church. Building was started at the beginning of the 14th century and it was consecrated in 1452. The dimensions of the church are also remarkable: length 69.37 m, width 22.85 m, height 16.02 m. Several chapels were added to the church - Gothic chapel of St. Sophia, widow after the Czech King Wenceslas IV, chapel of St. Anna and baroque chapel of St. John the Almoner.
The tower of the church was constructed simultaneously with 3 naves of the church, while it was an integral part of city walls serving to defend the town. Its height is 85 m and there is a gilded pillow of dimensions 2 m x 2 m on the top, while a 1 m high copy of the Hungarian royal crown weighing 300 kg is placed atop this. In the 16th century, the Dome witnessed the coronation of Hungarian Kings. During 1563 - 1830, 11 Hungarian Kings and eight royal wives were crowned here. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis was played for the first time in this church.
The only preserved gate of the medieval city fortifications. Its Gothic foundations were laid in the 1st half of the 14th century. During 1511 - 1513 it was heightened, and during 1753 – 1758 it was rebuilt into its present appearance when a statue of St. Michael was placed on the top of the 51-metre high tower. At present, the Museum of Weapons and City Fortifications is located within the tower. A very nice view of the old city is provided from the tower.
Classicist palace built during 1778 - 1781 on the basis of designs by Melchior Hefele for the archbishop Jozef Bathyány. In the attic of the roof, there are allegorical statues by J. Kögler and F. Prokop as well as vases by J. A. Messerschmidt. In the top of the tympanum, there is the coat of arms of Jozef Bathyány and a cardinal's hat weighing 150 kg. A mosaic by Ernest Zmeták is placed in the tympanum. Statuettes of angels in the facade are holding the letter I - Iusticia = justice and C - Clementia = graciousness - the personal motto of the cardinal.
In the entrance hall of the palace on the right-hand side, there is a memorial tablet commemorating the signing of the so-called Peace of Pressburg in 1805, while a fountain of St. George can be found in the courtyard along with the entrance to the chapel of St Ladislaus in the corner. On the first floor there is the Mirror Hall, which hosted the signing of the Peace of Pressburg in 1805 between Napoleonic France and Hapsburg Austria after the battle at Austerlitz. King Ferdinand signed the document here on the abolition of serfdom in Hungary in 1848.
Collections of the Gallery of the City of Bratislava are located in the palace, with a unique collection of 17th century tapestries from an English royal weaving factory at Mortlake depicting the tragic love between Hero and Leandros.x

So as always lets start with the 15 brewpubs as of August 2023 then move on to some of the better craft beer bars;
FABRIKA the beer pub, Štefánikova 864/4, Staré Mesto
Hours: Daily 11.30 - 00.00
A rather large brewpub, new-fashioned. It seems to be the hotel restaurant for the four star Loft Hotel. A really nice ambiance with a rustic/industrial feel which is done really well! The brew kit can clearly be seen behind glass screens at the rear of the dining area. Great friendly English speaking staff. Try the creamy lentil and pulled pork soup, it's rich, warming, smokey, delicious; a truly unctuous delight after the walk up to the Soviet War Memorial nearby, which I also recommend. All being near the station, it provides an excellent start to a break in Bratislava. Highly recommend 😃Normal food prices and cheap in house brewed beer!
Pivovar Shenk,(Výčap U Ernőho) Námestie SNP 484/25
Hours: Daily 16.00 to 23.00 ?
Located in the Old Market Hall. A small family run brewpub with a simple and functional interior. Self-service, glasses can be taken out onto the square where people gather around freely. Four taps, all of them with beers by Shenk, available in at least 0.4 l. There is a fridge with bottles as well. Good prices, friendly people behind the bar, relaxed and lively atmosphere. Nice place for having a few beers.
Alžbetka pivovar, Mickiewiczova 2242/1
Hours: Daily 10.00 - 22.00
A brewpub in a nicely restored stately building. The front room of Mestský pivovar Alžbetka has a big picture window for people watching but it gets hot in there on sunny afternoons. A long corridor with bar tables, then a row of fermenters which leads to the brewhouse. In front of the brew house is a long high bar and then a room full of restaurant tables. As well as 6 pf their own beers there are ix guest beers included some from small breweries outside Bratislava. No flights. The atmosphere is a mixture between industrial charms and modern cosiness. Prices are quite ok so well worth a visit.
Dunajský pivovar, Tyrsovo nabrezie
Hours: Mon - Thu 11.00 – 23.00h Fri, Sat 11.00 – 01.00h Sun 11.00 – 23.00h
Brewpub is located on the boat anchored in the Danube river! Very interesting place - I never saw brewery on a boat before! Ambiance is nice, with brewing equipment in front of entrance. Beers are the same as in Patronsky pivovar, (above^^) as well as brewer. Meals are tasty, beers average!
Ružinov brewery Komín, Miletičova 17
Hours: Daily 10.00 - 22.00
It's the place where the Komin Brewery, brews and serves their beers. Don't be fooled by the address. It is in the Mileticova open air market. Just look for the chimney, (The name comes from a huge industrial chimney next to the building) it's next door. Post industrial bar on two levels with old black and white photos depicting ordinary peoples' lives and plain wooden furniture. The garden in front seems to be perfect for warm summer evenings. A 2-storey-building the beer is brewed on the ground floor. Two big rooms with long tables, traditional Slovak food and American-style burgers, also some vegetarian dishes. The beer range is quite good, the prices also.
Múzejný pivovar - Múzeum obchodu Bratislava, Linzbothova 16
Hours: Tue-Sun 17,00-22,00
Nice little brewpub within Trade museum with a local feeling. Quite hard to find if you don’t have a local guide. Five brews on tap that are in good condition, service is quick, ambiance and atmosphere is nice and if you are lucky enough you can meet brewer he will show you brewery. Worth for a journey from city centre.
Bratislavský Meštiansky Pivovar Dunajská, Dunajská ulica 21
Hours: Mo, Tue, We, Sat 11,00 - 23,00 Fri 11,00 - 24,00 Sun 11,00 - 22,00
This place is halfway between the town centre and Richtar Jaku. Inside its large, light and modern. They had only 2 house beers, but both are pretty tasty. The food is a contemporary take on Slovak cuisine. The Staff speak good English (also ask for the English menu). Well worth going for food and a couple of beers.
Bratislavský Meštiansky Pivovar, Drevená 8 .
Hours: Mo-Thu 11,00-24,00 Fri-Sat 11,00-01,00 Sun 11-23
A beautiful brewpub just outside the old city centre. A smaller version of its sister with no outdoor space that I saw. Very nice selection of traditional food. Arranged on three floors with smokers room. Friendly and quick staff. Insufficient choice of the homemade beers as there are only two?. Elegant, modern and pleasant atmosphere, this place is a gem!
Kláštorný pivovar, Námestie SNP 469/8
Hours: Mon - Sat 12.00 - 22.00
Quite nice interior's over 3 levels, downstairs is something that gives the impression of the monastery's former mess hall! Stone-laden decor. On the ground floor there is lots of dark wood, stained glass, not much space but cosy and really well laid-out with brewery in the back, also a restaurant upstairs, which serves food and the same beer. Only 3 of their own traditional house beers on tap, other beers are from big breweries, I don’t understand that? The beer is in good and the staff are quick polite and know something about beer. The food is tasty. Worth for visit.
Patrónka Pivovar & Restaurant, Brnianska 57
Hours: Daily 11.00 - 00.00
Rustic brewpub specialising in unpasteurized beer, hosting live brewing nights and traditional food. Located by the highway, looking much like a regular highway diner. Once you’re inside, there are big windows to the brewery and if you’re in Bratislava at all, you must visit and experience the beautiful copper toilets! The menu only shows one beer brewed on premises, Patron Svetly 11.5. They’ve got four taps, one is for the local version of coke, the other for a non-alcoholic beer. That leaves a free tap for something else? The food was typical Slovak fare, so it’s heavy and hearty.
Pivovar U Ábela, Pri vinohradoch 31
Hours: Daily 16.00 - 22.00
A medium-sized brewpub, about a half-an-hour journey away from the city centre. Looks quite spacious due to the lack of walls inside, has a somewhat minimalistic feel thanks to its industrial style. There is a long bar across the room from the entry and a large blackboard in the back of it. There are six beers by Ábela on tap plus bottles in bomber size can be taken home for a reasonable price. The staff are very friendly, talkative and attentive, their English is refreshingly good. Highly recommended, it's worth the trip from the city centre.
Pivovar Hops, Vilová 2995/4, Petržalka
Hours: Tues - Sat 15.00 -22.00 Sun - Mon 17.00 - 22.00
A very nice place with unique atmosphere, a lovely and cosy place, a real hidden gem in this small village. Located in-between high-rise apartment blocks, a pleasant 5-10 minute walk or bike ride from Clock-Block, or 5 minutes from the Petrzalka train station (three stops from Most SNP). A large interior with a serving bar and some restaurant tables, lots of old radios covering some shelves, large picnic tables on a big covered patio/deck, which is a smoking area of course. A small brew-house next to the bar were they brew their own beer: crystal clear with a fresh, sparkling taste, and very consistent quality. The food is good as well and the atmosphere is very easy going. Definitely worth a visit!
Pivovar Brewer, Osvetová 2881/2
Hours: Daily 11.00 - 22.00
A new-ish modern brewery restaurant, located in suburb of Bratislava. They have 4 beers brewed on site. Inside it modern and spacious the copper brew kit is clearly visible and in use. A massive party covered beer garden. Can get very busy a lunch time and weekends? Well worth the trip out. 🙃
Múzejný hostinec - Rock v múzeu, Linzbothova 16, Podunajské Biskupice
Hours: Tues - Sun 17.00 - 22.00
A great Nano Brewery Museum. Old school fermentation tanks and flawless beers! Located far off the city centre in a nostalgic setting which can be reached easily by taking bus line 70 from 'Most SNP' A very cosy and authentic place, looks like a pub of decades ago, the brewing equipment can be seen as well. Until now, they brewed their own beer but they ceased production in 2018? They are supplied by 'Beer Factory' from Plzen. The staff are very friendly, polite and talkative, prices for the beers were very low? Its Really sad that they will no longer brew beers by themselves, but this place is more about the ambiance which is pretty unique in Bratislava and therefore absolutely worth the short journey by bus.
Richtár Jakub, (Gallery Šenk pub & bar) Lazaretská 2332/27.
Hours: Mon-Fri 16.00 - 20.00
Note New Location. Richtar Jakub only nave one (1) tap the others are all Bernard Brewery? The owner was very friendly. The outside space is very nice and the atmosphere is calm and welcoming. They do snacks and basic food.
Mešuge Craft Beer Pub, Vysoká 15
Hours: Daily 11.00 -23.00 of later?
A cool place that feels like a pub somewhere out in mountains or village. They have really good food and they have a great beer range so it is definitely worth visiting. A plus is, that it is not expensive at all. Inside it's a medium-sized pub with a nice enclosed garden. Located close to the 'Slovak Pub' and 'Kollarko', it doesn't look overly inviting from the outside but it has its charm despite its simplicity from some sort of a worn-down look. I think they have seven or eight taps, all except one wheat beer by Primator are house beers, varying from classic Lager styles to American Ales. Excellent service, their beers are good with the superb meat and cheese platter are a treat.
100 piv, Medena 33, Bratislava
Hours: Mon -Fri 12:00 - 22:00 Sat -Sun 15:00 - 22:00
A cosy little bottle shop/pub, on a quiet side street in the centre of Bratislava. Quite small inside with only a few tables, also a seating outside on the street. They have 6 taps and nearly 100 bottles from Slovak craft scene, Denmark, England, Belgium. Prices for local beers are very good (some of the international beers were a bit pricey though). But prices are the same for take away or drinking on site, so if you drink there the prices are still OK. A great place to meet fellow beer nerds and hung out with them for a few hours. The owner is a real expert on beer, so he is able to recommend you your favorite beer! 😜
Damian Beer & Ale, Trenčianska 16005
Hours: Daily 16.00 - 22.30
An excellent bottle shop/pub not far away from Komin, located in a courtyard, can be reached easily by tram or bus and an additional five-to-ten-minute-walk. A simple and functional interior with a few tables outside as well. They have around 20 taps. A couple are brewed by Damian Gypsy Brewing, at various locations. Lots of different styles such as pilsener, ipa, sour, imperial stout, etc. A packed place on a weekday night. Cash only. Overall a must stop for any beer geek with plenty of Central European offerings.
CLOCK BLOCK Restaurant, Zadunajská cesta 12, Petržalka
Hours: Daily 15.000 - 22.00
A hidden gem opposite Old Town over the UFO Bridge. A nice space, with lots of clocks on the walls. They have 2 house taps (which are brewed by a separate brewery for them). Also 4 guest taps. They have some bottles too. The food menu is solid and has lots of options. Delicious food! Overall a highly recommended stop, although the tap options are somewhat limited.
Omama Shop Café, Sasinkova 2640, Staré Mesto
Open: Mon - Sat 10.00 - 23.00
A unique location, inside is like a museum filled with a rich collection of historical outdoor advertising signs covering the walls. The summer terrace is located in the inner courtyard, which is surrounded by the historical buildings and trees. The pub serves nice local food and local beers, wines and spirits. The terrace closes early (before22:00) since there are residents living in the building, however you can still continue indoors until the closing hour. Otto says; Nice staff and tasty food, simple restaurant-pub with great beer and really comfortable atmosphere.
Hostinec Opapa, Moskovská 2652/16
Open: Mon - Sat 16.00 - 22.00
Anew multi-tap craft beer bar in the forma Pivovar Richtar Jakub place. A unique space where you won't know where to look first, a garden in the inner block, a large selection of craft beers and a little something special (pâtés, pressed cheesesl ocal production). A pleasant surprise is also a special in the form of craft non-alcoholic beer, so everyone will find something for themselves. I definitely recommend visiting.
Feriba Pub - rozvoz craftového piva a jedál, Kladnianska 1505/10
Hours: Mon - Sat 16.00 - 22.00
This pub is a hidden gem in Bratislava. A quaint pub in a residential area surrounded by apartment blocks, a 20 minute bus ride from the city centre. The bar has a few narrow rooms and a small terrace in the back, a flat screen on the wall displaying the beer menu and the amount of beer which is left, plus some large chalk boards making up the entire walls sometimes. They have six craft beers on tap all reasonably priced. Filled rolls are served from a classic plastic dome! Nice vibe and cool staff, and worth considering to spend a night sampling tasty beers.
BeAbout, Prešernova 4
A Restaurant with Pilsner Urquell on tap and a decent selection of Belgian Trappist (Orval, Rochefort) and lambic (Kriek, Framboise) beers. Good pub food to match.🥨
De Zwaan Café, Panská 7
Probably the best spot for beer in Slovakia. The ambiance is old world Belgian, with interesting cathedral frescos on the walls. In a central area within the historical district. The proper glassware is used & friendly staff make a great visit. Serves items like Hoegaardan Grand Cru/Forbidden Fruit, Triple Karmeliet, Gulden Draak, etc.
Kollarko, Kollárovo námestie 2932/23
Hours: Daily 15.00 - 22.00
A small bar/kiosk in an unusual semicircular building at the end of a square. On a sunny day you can enjoy your beer outside in their lovely beer garden with a fine view to the street, under a pretty leaf motif canopy. Also you can sit on the rooftop of a little kiosk. The staff are friendly. There are five Jama beers, five Stupavars and two guests. Another mandatory stop on a powerline through old Bratislava.
Be Unorthodox Craft Beer Bar, Panská 13
Hours: Mon-Thu, Sun 15:00-23:45, Fri, Sat 15:00-02:00
A cool craft beer bar in the heart of Bratislava's old town, offering nine keg beers and a small selection of exotic bottles and cans. A few seats inside, but mostly outside tables. The perfect destination for beer enthusiasts who've had enough of Pilsner!
Urban House, Laurinska 14
Hours: Mon - Sun: 10:00 am - 10:00 pm
This bar is located in very central location. It’s not primary beer pub, but they have 6 craft beers from Slovak breweries, but also from Mikkeller on tap. They serve bistro meals and some cakes. The staff are polite, and they have also some knowledge about the beer, they serve. If you are in city centre, it’s well worth going in.
PohodKafe - Restaurant at End of Galaxy, Klariska
The restaurant at end of Galaxy is a loose interpretation from the Douglas Adams Hitchhiker books. No Pan Galactic Gargle blaster but the Becherovka is present. Presently a Staro Brno pub. The four table patio on the cobblestone street is quite pleasant to sit at and watch the world go by. There are many places like this in Bratislava, yet this one stands out due to the parade of beautiful women. Go there and see what I mean. I sat here for three days in a row. Friendly staff with English translation menu. Decent pub grub. DONT PANIC!
Slovak Pub, Obchodná 62, Bratislava.
Really great brewpub/restaurant! Opposite the Vysoká tramstop on route 1 from the main station (Hlavni Stanica) into town. Cosy atmosphere, excellent central European food and perfect service. The beer list is neither very long nor anything special, although their own beers are OK and goes great with the food.
Žil VERNE, 13, Panská 245
Hours: Daily 15.00 - 22.00
A small bar in the heart of Old Town, so it is quite convenient if you’re doing other touristy things in the area. Inside white stone arches and fin-de-siecle graphics dominate the interior. A small number of taps, a blend of traditional and western styles. There was a beer on specifically brewed for Zil Verne, also. Very attentive and quick service, and a very comfortable and chill environment to sip on beers. Great place for some Slovakian ticks. 🍻
Beerdock, Fajnorovo nábrežie 51/2, Staré Mesto
Open; Tues - Sun 15.00 - 00.00
Beer with a view. An awesome spot were you can sit watching the boats and sunset whilst supping from an extensive craft beer list. It's a formally disused ship dock has a new lease of life, I love supporting spots like this over the big chains (as you have probably guessed by now 😎) With 12 craft beers on tap that have a convenient tasting option. The staff are well trained and know about beer. There is a cool vibe to the place. Ottos top tip; visit the Detske Muzeum and then visit this bar👍🏻.
U Rytiera, Slovanské Nábrezie, 962 (;Devin)
Situated at the feet of the Devin castle (bus 29 from Bratislava Novy Most Station). A Garden pub, in an optimal location with beautiful view on the Devin castle. Small and modest inside. Discreet choice of draft beers, mostly Czech. Much pleasant external space with long covered tables. Great in summer.
Zbrojnoš pub, Michalská 390/22, Staré Mesto
Classic Sovanian bar, looks traditional central European and has a downstairs section. Sometimes they have live bands playing which is cool. Only problem for me is that people can smoke inside and you can't pay by card, CASH Only! Also usual bar snacks and beer wise Gambrinus, Pilsner Urquell, Birell NA, Saris Tamvy Dark, and Hoegaarden.
Old Fashioned Bar, Laurinská 214/14 Temporarily closed Aug'23
Not sure if this place strictly belongs here as it only sells Czech beer, but as Černá Hora is good stuff I thought I’d include it. Just off the main square and sells the excellent granát. Definitely interesting interior and highly posh bar. There are large sofas surrounding a square bar offering great seating for groups as well as singles and couples.
17's BAR, Hviezdoslavovo námestie 171/17
A nice and atmospheric bar in the old city center of Bratislava. This bar apparently has the best garlic soup in Bratislava? A large selection of biers from Czech Rep. Plus a few Belgian bottles, good pizza. It is cash only - cards are NOT accepted!

Zámocký Pivovar, Zámocká 13
Hours: Permanently closed 2023
A descent corner brewpub with one big room and long tables. located just a few steps from the old city centre and the castle, this is a place definitely worth visiting when in Bratzislava. Service is pleasant and quick. They serve four of their own different beers, that you can also take out in pet bottles.
Novomestský Pivovar, Škultétyho 5
Hours: Permanently closed
New pub replacing Starosloviensky pivovar, which moved to new location? So they have beers which are brewed for them using a recipe from Jama craft brewery, beers from Czech and Slovak medium and small breweries. Besides this they have a "beers shop", where you can buy beers from Hook Norton, Lvivske, and Kaltenecker. Recommended place.
Belavijo Pizzeria, Majerníkova 13/A
Great pizzeria restaurant with a beautiful view over Austria. Perfect service and huge selection of absolutely tasty Italian food. They sell Stella Artois and Pilsner Urquell. Recommended.
